It depends on where your weak spots are….if you have some issues in different areas and want to know how to begin, track your stats…….I use, Fairways hit, Greens in Regulation, First Putt Distance, Putts per GIR, oevrall putts, & Drive distance. Once you have the data you can decide whic area to work on first……..I always tell people if you’re not sure where to begin, work on the short game…..Chipping and putting can knock scores down fast…..especially lag putting practice….a 40 footer should be a 2 putt max…..if you have a tendency to have problems with 3 putting, work on the lag end of it…….work on chipping and pitching…..practice getting the ball within 3-4 feet to begin with…as you improve take your target down to 2-3 feet.
As far as the swing itself, find what swing and tempo allows you to hit the center of the club face each time……golf shops have impact tape you can put on the club face to track your ball striking…….experiment with moving closer or farther away from the ball…..experiment with ball position…..all of these are factors that affect the results of your swing. Remember though, each change takes a lot of range time to ingrain in your muscle memory……Hope you do well!

Question by Terry: What specific golf clubs does a beginner need to play?I know you need a driver and a putter but what else?
I just ordered a driver on line and that is all I own. I’m going to practice driving at a virtual golf place until it gets warmer outside. I am an absolute beginner. What would be the minimum clubs I would need to actually play a round? I am an older (54) female so think the hybrids would be good for me. I am not actually looking for brand recommendations here, but club types. That said, the Callaway GES system sounds good to me because it apparently only has seven clubs which sounds about right to me but I am having trouble finding it. Does anyone know how I could replicate that buying individual clubs? I don’t really want a full set, at least not yet. And carrying 14 clubs around, many of which I probably wouldn’t use at least not soon, sounds like a waste of energy. So what is the minimum and what are they? Please be specific because a lot of what I have read is pretty confusing. So many choices! Thanks.

If your a beginner and don’t want to carry around all the clubs at first then I would recommend just getting the basic irons 3,5,7, and 9. I would also recommend a pitching wedge and also a fairway driver like a 3 or 5 wood to start with. After that if you feel comfortable then you could fill in the rest of your set.
