Golf Irons – Take Your Game to a Whole ‘Nother Level

Golf irons or golf clubs are so called because the head of the golf club is made from some type of metal, it was used as a way to distinguish between the “woods” and the “metals” today however even the woods are made from metal but the moniker has stuck.

Golf irons are made in primarily two different ways, the cavity heads and the blade style. The cavity head is favored by those that need a little extra punch on the course and the blade style is favored by the Pros.

The difference between the two styles is that the cavity head like its name implies has a cavity hollowed out on the back of the head, while the blade style is without any hollowing out. The cavity head is more effective at reaching longer distances.

Golf Set

Usually there is a set of golf irons that is sold it contains 8 clubs all together. The size of the iron is indicated somewhere on the iron, either on the club head or on the handle. The clubs are delegated numbers that are relevant to the length of the handle. Each handle length goes from smaller to greater length. A good caddy will recommend which iron to use to make a particular shot. Most sets skip the numbered one and two irons and instead start at the number three irons with the number one and two sold separately. There is a method to this madness the number one and the number two golf irons have such narrow club heads and long shafts that is difficult for most recreational users to use them.

Each clubs design determines how much length a ball will go when hit by the club. Irons fall into one of three categories; short irons, mid irons and long irons. For the novice the best club to use is the short iron.

Purchasing a set or golf irons can get really expensive when you start getting into the designer series, some avid golfers swear by the more expensive models. A good rule of thumb for the novice is to purchase only what you can afford and leave the extremes alone for now.

Woods and Irons

As previously discussed golf irons earned the moniker to distinguish them from the wood clubs, however today the former wood clubs are also made out of metal. The difference now lies in the size of the club head not in the material that it is fashioned from. Although woods are still called woods and irons are still called irons.

Woods are generally lighter and are often preferred by female golfers the shafts are also typically shorter although not in all sizes.

Golfing can be really challenging, having the right golf irons is one of the keys to success. The right iron can make a world of difference in keeping that handicap way down.
